Today were going to review the word processing software called OpenOfiice.org (yes this program DOES have a .org in it’s name). So what exactly is this program? It’s a free program which contains the same stuff you would find in your Microsoft Office suite. When I first installed OpenOffice.org I was quite amazed. It looks practically like Microsoft Office but a bit simplified. Although it might look like it just has flash, theirs a lot under the hood.

OpenOffice.org contains most everything that I need to use for my school work. Once I had to write a 2 page paper in Spanish and Microsoft didn’t have a plugin for Spanish. I decided to try OpenOffice.org and it took just seconds for me to find it instead of having to go from article to article on how to get Spanish for Microsoft Word. The only downside to using the word processor is that OpenOffice.org uses a different file extension then Word and you have to convert. Most of the time it comes out right but if you made a really complicated Document using Word only tools you are out of luck. The rest of the programs are pretty nice and act properly, but I will admit I hardly use anything else other then reports.

In all I would recommend that if you are considering getting Microsoft Office get OpenOffice.org because it’s cheaper, better and includes more then you would expect.

When little girls and cute pictures combine you will NOT get tech users. You will get a bunch of little girls who want to buy it and all the nerds will start using Mac’s and downloading Linux. So congradulations for miving to the tween marketplace. Hopefully we will not see Windows Pink edition coming out anytime soon.

I have been away for about 2 weeks now. Why? Well first I went to New York City which knocked my schedule of blogging of course. Then school started and I had to replace blogging with a text book. But theirs one giant thing that happened. A site called GameReport wants me to make them a site. So I decided to go along with them. They allowed payed for GatorHost with unlimited space and bandwidth so I decided I would move from PhireFast and get a free site. So I have set GameReport up with a temporary site which I hope to have running up 100% soon. But to do that I will need someone to help me! So far I have one person and I need 1 and maby even 2 more people to help me. Please contact me at Peter@gamereportonline.com or Peter@techtalkcorner.net (Oh, By the way, this is now a .net and not a .com in case you haven’t noticed) I will try to keep posting here. Also, I will be blogging for GameReport so I think I will stop writing gaming news and just to regular tech news. Hope to blog again for you guys soon!

I use Phirefast to power this blog. I find them a great provider for a great price. I was able to have a online interview with the owner Mark Mutti.

Q: How long has Phirefast been running for?

A: Almost 7 years

Q: What are your server specs?
Answer: Our servers run on intel quad cores and have speeds of 100 mbps.

Q: What OS do the servers use?
A: Cent OS 5

Q: Scenario: A server goes down (CPU fried) How long until it is up?
A: Only a couple hours at most. The imporant thing to note here is that we have hourly offsite backups. So if that happened, we’d send those backups to a spare server and get them back up immediately instead of waiting for the CPU replacement. Also, using good hardware is what’s most important here. We use hardware that doesn’t have a history of failing.

If you are looking for a great web hosting provider I would go with Phirefast. For more info on Phirefast go to www.phirefast.com

Yep. Microsoft has come up with a very “original” idea. They are being built as we speak and the job listing have been posted in the local papers. To get this job you must be warm to customers, know sales strategies AND be able to list 75 pounds. So what does that mean? Are they going to be selling specialized computer fixers that have the appearance of a 75 pound weight? Or will they sell the complete manual on how to make Vista work fast? I could keep on making wise cracks about Microsoft and how they are so dumb but I don’t want to burn a hole in my keyboard.

For all you people who are sick of talking to “Joe” is “Texas” who has a very heavy Indian accent that you can barley even understand him or going to Geek Squad and being overcharged by 100 dollars or more for doing a job that could have taken much faster, Microsoft will have their version of Apples “genius bars”.

So far only 2 stores have been announced. They will be located in Scottsdale Arizonia (My Home Town FYI), and Mission Viejo California. They will open sometime in the fall.

Nike+ Review

I recently purchased 2 products, the Nike+ sports kit and the lacelid to go with it. Since I had no Nike+ shoes and I didn’t feel like getting new shoes I just got a lacelid for it from www.lacelid.com. It was easy to install the lacelid and easy to put the Nike+ sensor into. The Nike+ sports kit came with a manual, 2 booklets of lawyer stuff, the Nike+ with the adapter for the iPod. I put it in then the Nike+ option appeared on the menu.

It’s very easy to navigate around all the settings – even on my Nano 3G. All the options were self explanatory and the main thing you really had to do with it was set your music up and start the workout. I ran around my block for a while slowing down and speeding up to see the response time of the adapter and the sensor which is about 1 second. When I neared the goal I set at the beginning of my work out it would give me a countdown in what ever unit of measurement I had selected….kinda. I set the Nike+ sensor for one mile. When I was 400 meters away it announced I was 400 meters away from my goal…I had set the Nike+ sensor to US measurements but it kept announcing my distance left in meters which was no use to me at all. Thankfully time goals were not counted down to me in light-years.

Syncing my runs with nikeplus.com was very easy. I just plugged my iPod it and my scores were uploaded. I could then view my runs and see how far I had come from the beginning. Also you could set up the Nike coach and it would tell you what the optimum run/walk would be for you and how long to run and how long to walk and how long to break. Sadly you can’t sync that with your iPod but can only read it on the computer. On Nikeplus.com you can set calorie goals, runs per week goals, distance traveled and how long it takes you to do a mile. My favorite thing on Nikeplus.com was that you could join challenges with other people or race in a team. I found one interesting challenge which you guys might like. The Mac vs PC vs Linux fans race, as of press date Mac is winning and has 5 times more runs laped then PC users (probably because mac’s bore people to easily ;) ).

In all this is a really great product for anyone. You don’t have to be a health nut to enjoy Nike+. Basically if you want to keep fit or loose weight or just track which one of your friends runs faster this is a great product to have. Although it is a 30$ product it is priceless when it comes to the site and the sensor.
